This may come as a surprise to some, or not, but pop princess Katy Perry has been crowned the highest-selling digital act of all time by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

It¡¯s every musician¡¯s ¡®Teenage Dream¡¯ to accomplish such a feat, however, it was the candy-wearing, green-haired pop songstress who took home the crown.

Perry has currently sold in excess of 72 million digital singles in the US alone, and is currently 20 million ahead of any other artist. Rihanna and Taylor Swift trail not so closely behind with 52 and 51 million units.

The singer¡¯s catalog boasts 18 Gold, 16 Platinum and 56 Multi-Platinum digital single awards, with her 2010 smash hit ¡®Firework¡¯ in the lead, with over 9 million downloads. ¡®California Gurls¡¯ and ¡®E.T¡¯ have both been downloaded 7 million times, followed by ¡®Dark Horse¡¯, ¡®Hot n Cold¡¯ and ¡®Teenage Dream¡¯ with over 6 million downloads.

¡°Katy Perry is a force to be reckoned with in music¡± RIAA Chairman & CEO Cary Sherman said. ¡°She embodies all that makes a true global superstar, the musical talent, the extraordinary drive and genuine charisma, and an intrinsic connection with her fans.¡±

Perry posted a photo on her Instagram, posing with the sizable award, with the caption reading: ¡°Over 72 million served! Thanks for the award RIAA! #THISISHOWWEDO.¡±

The award previously went to Barbadian pop singer, Rihanna, after her singles garnered over 52 million downloads. However, it now seems Queen Katy not only kissed a girl, but she also stole her crown and took off running. All we can say is good luck to any artist that hopes to usurp her for the title. Katy Perry is currently on a world tour in support of her 2013 release, Prism.
