Over 100 expert music industry presenters will descend on Melbourne for the annual non-profit music summit Face The Music on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November at the Arts Centre. This year, the program will partner and coincide with Melbourne Music Week, now in its second year, to highlight and discuss the current state and future potential of the music industry in Melbourne.

Councillor Cathy Oke from Melbourne Music Week Steering Committee, said the City of Melbourne is proud to partner with Face The Music. ¡°Melbourne Music Week will co-present four panel sessions with industry experts on everything from how we can protect Melbourne¡¯s live music industry through to practical advice on how to get your band booked at a top Melbourne venue.¡±

¡°Melbourne is one of the world¡¯s great music cities and a key element of Melbourne Music Week is providing support for the local industry and nurturing up-and-coming musicians to ensure this reputation continues for years to come,¡± Councillor Oke said.

In a session presented by Melbourne Music Week, Face The Music and Australasian World Music Expo (AWME), the idea of Melbourne as one of the world¡¯s ¡°Great Music Cities¡± will be explored with some of the world¡¯s leading music conference representatives Brent Grulke (SXSW ¨C USA), Becky Ayres (Liverpool Sound City ¨C UK) and Daniel Barkowski (Popkomm ¨C GER), alongside local representatives Councillor Cathy Oke (City of Melbourne), Patrick Donovan (Music Victoria) and Chris Johnston (The Age). They will explain what makes a dynamic music city, and how we can apply this to Melbourne.

The Melbourne Music Week and Face The Music partnership also see some of Melbourne¡¯s most important music cultural policy makers and educators discuss Melbourne¡¯s diverse and dynamic live music culture and how we protect it amidst an increasing populations, urban development, issues and legislation; plus some of the city¡¯s most influential music bookers will reveal what they are looking for when allocating prime nights to bands! The Live Landscape session hosted by Jaymz Clements (triple j magazine) will feature nine booking agents: Sarah Guppy (Revolver), Paris Martine (Phoenix Public House, Grace Darling Hotel), Mary Mihelakos (Yah Yahs), Andy Moore (Pony), Anita Nedeljkovic (Way Over There), Amanda Palmer (The Tote), Darve Smith (Ding Dong Lounge), Emily Ulman (Toff in Town) and James Young (Cherry Bar); while the Sounds of the City session, hosted by Dobe Newton (The Bushwackers Band, NMIT) will gather together Ben Eltham (Freelance Writer, Journalist, Researcher and Creative Producer), Doctor Kate Shaw (University of Melbourne), Professor Rob Adams (City of Melbourne) and Associate Professor Shane Homan (Monash University).
Now in its fourth year, Face The Music provides the Victorian music community with a platform for professional and creative career development through presentations, discussions, networking and practical workshops. Face The Music 2011 is presented by some of Australia¡¯s key music industry agencies: The Push, Music Victoria, Melbourne Music Week, APRA|AMCOS, the Arts Centre, Arts Victoria, AIR, AAM, AWME and media partners 3RRR, Mess+Noise, Street Press Australia, Shout Out Loud Print, Plakkit and d.tail Noisemakers.
